Harry Potter, the Next Generation

1. The Leaky Problem

Albus Severus Potter watched as the rest of his family disappeared through the magical barrier. He was on a train to his very first year at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. His father, Harry Potter, was quite famous. He had defeated the evil wizard Voldemort in his last year at Hogwarts.
As the Hogwarts Express picked up speed, Albus settled himself comfortably in his seat. He looked remarkably like Harry, with deep, green eyes, and a thin body. His eyes were inherited by Harry's mother, Lily.
Barely containing his excitement, he asked Rose Weasley, who was sitting opposite to him, "Whaddaharbsyodag?" Rose looked startled.
 "Excuse me?"
Albus calmed himself down and cleared his throat.
"What house do you want to be in?"
Hogwarts had four houses- Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw, and Slytherin. Each was represented by a lion, a badger, an eagle, and a snake. In Albus's opinion, Slytherin was a very evil house.          "Gryffindor'll be great," Rose replied seriously. Albus nodded enthusiastically.
"My brother, James, says that we need to duel the headmaster to be put in our house- something about bravery of the pure heart."    Rose laughed out loud.
"You believed that? Well, my mum says all we have to do is put on an old hat called the Sorting Hat. And on the very odd chances that we do duel someone, it'll be the headmistress, not the headmaster. Minerva Mcgonagall is in charge, remember?"
 Albus grinned.
 "There she goes, Ms Know-it-all."
Rose stuck out her tongue. The two were quite different. Albus was always diving headfirst into anything. He had once hid in a trash can to spy on a very strange neighbor, who didn't seem to come out of her house; Rose was thoughtful and suspicious.
At that moment, the compartment door slid open. It was Draco Malfoy's son, Scorpius Malfoy. An awkward silence hung in the air. "Can I sit here?" Scorpius asked timidly. Albus shifted over. "Sure," he said, while eyeing him curiously. Their fathers had been enemies at school. He watched as Scorpius glanced uncomfortably at Rose- she was completely ignoring him, staring determinedly out the window. Albus could sense her hatred. Back in their parents' second year, Draco had called Rose's mother, Hermione, a 'mudblood,' which was a cruel word for a Muggle-born. Scorpius opened his mouth as if to say something, but closed it again. He continued this process until he finally burst out.
"Look, Rose, I'm really sorry my dad called Mrs Weasley a mudblood."
Albus nearly fell out of his seat in surprise; he had never heard someone calling Hermione 'Mrs Weasley.' He usually called her 'Aunt Hermione.' Rose scowled.
"What do you know, Mr Pure-Bloodiness?"
 Scorpius straightened himself.
 "Actually, I'm a half-blood. My mother is a Muggle-born."
 Rose sneered.
"Perhaps your dad was deaf when he made the decision."
Scorpius turned red. He drew his wand.
"Don't you dare talk about my family like that," he said. Though it was quite less intimidating, maybe because of his size and the frightened, uncertain expression on his face. The door flew open again, but this time it was James. He was pointing his wand at Scorpius.
"Don't you dare lay a finger on them, Malfoy," he said quietly. "I'm pretty good at Stunning." Albus, who thought this was going quite crazy now, held up his hand.
 "OK, people, calm down."
"Yeah, James. Take a chill pill," Rose agreed. James looked confused.
"Um, hello? I'm trying to save you from this lunatic."
Albus patted James on the back.
"You don't need to. Dear Scorpius isn't a lunatic. He's a friend. Right?"
He stared at Rose, who blushed and said, "Ooh, right, um... friend! You don't need to kill our friend Scorpius."
 James lowered his wand.
 "OK, then. Have fun!"
He turned to go, then whispered, "I've got my eye on you, corpse." Albus sighed.
"Sorry about that. He loves Dad and when he heard that your dad tried to torture him, he was in a rage."
 Scorpius shrugged.
"I get that attitude all the time."
Albus sternly looked at Scorpius and Rose.
"Right, you two. I've had enough of this baby fight. You two are to shake hands and apologize. Then you will sit together in the same seat and maintain peace with each other. Understand?"
 They both nodded.
"Right. Now who wants some sweets? I can hear the trolley coming."

The sky was indigo by the time they arrived at Hogwarts. Albus, Rose, and Scorpius all hopped off the train and searched for the towering figure of Hagrid, the gamekeeper. Soon they saw Hagrid and headed off towards him.
"Hi, Hagrid!" They chorused; that is, two of them chorused. Scorpius looked terrified.
" Hello," he squeaked. Hagrid's shaggy black beard that covered half his face was as large as the cage of Albus's owl, Godric. Now more taller than the Hogwarts Express, he grinned down at them.
" Hullo. You must be Al, Rose, and..."
He broke off. Rose answered his unspoken question.
"This is Scorpius, Hagrid. Scorpius Malfoy."
 Hagrid looked astonished.
"Never thought I'd see the day of Potters and Malfoys together," he said gruffly. "Well, better do me job." He took a great, deep breath. "Firs' years over here! C'mon, firs' years!" he hollered. Soon, the first years formed a line and followed Hagrid to the lake. Hagrid took a boat for himself. He looked back at the teensy toddlers who were all standing timidly on the shore. "Well? What're ye all doing? Get a boat!" They all climbed into a boat. Albus, Rose, and Scorpius got into one together. The boats glided forward. Rose whooped.
"Faster!" she yelled. Hagrid chuckled. "This is the fastest."
They were halfway across the lake when they heard moaning. Albus peered around.
"It can't be Moaning Myrtle, right?"
 Someone sniffed behind them.
 "Oh, very funny."
They all whipped around. It was Moaning Myrtle, as miserable as ever.
"You must be that Harry's kid. You look a lot like him. If you die, you can share my toilet as replacement for your dad. And you're that Ron Weasley's kid. You could lit a fire with that hair."
 Hagrid turned around.
"Ah, Myrtle. Pleasure. Did ye make that sound? What happened, got dumped by the U-bend?"
"No, I did not!" gasped Myrtle indignantly. "I'm not a monster, I'm a very delicate, very emotional, very..."
"Dumbo, fat-o, weirdo, crazy-o." Rose finished. "What's all that?" Albus asked. "My new words." said Rose. Myrtle looked quite offended. "Kids these days are so mean!" she complained. "Kids are terrible, the little meanies, stealing my toilet and rampaging around like elephants, and..."
But they did not hear what else kids were. With a sploosh and a scream, Myrtle dropped into the water. Scorpius looked as if he was on the verge of tears. "Am I that bad?" he sobbed. Hagrid looked confused. "No, ye ain't. I think it was me," he said, lifting his right arm and sniffing his armpit. He wrinkled his nose and put down his arm. Albus turned to Scorpius to comfort him, but he wasn't there. All that was in his seat were drops of water.
Rose looked over the boat's side. A slimy trail was covering it. Hagrid put off his moleskin coat, threw it at Albus, who got caught in the face, and dived into the water. Rose screamed.
"Oh my gosh, Hagrid! It's freezing! Can you swim?" she screeched into thin air. There was a great splash of water and Hagrid resurfaced. "Come to think of it, I can't," he growled. Albus groaned. He himself put off his school robes, and carefully lowered himself into the lake. "Albus!" Rose wailed.
"It's OK, I got swimming lessons back at home," he reassured her. He took a deep breath, then plunged into the water. It was murky and very, very cold. His body was already growing numb. Albus gave a little underwater shiver. He kicked out and swam through the water. The plants tangled themselves around his legs, making it hard to make steady process. Finally, Albus reached a patch where there was nothing except for a big pile of rocks. He circled around it and discovered a little hole. But his lungs were screaming for oxygen, so he rose to the surface way up. Albus burst through the water coughing and wiping his face. "He's there! Oi! C'mere, Al!" Hagrid boomed. Albus ignored him, took a deep breath and jumped back into the lake. He found the cave quickly and squeezed through the entrance. There, on the sandy floor, lay Scorpius who was, if possible, even paler than he usually was.
